What Is Numbers matching? In the 1960"s Pontiac had the reputation for the fastest cars on the strip and on the street starting with the 1964 Lemans GTO option. Ace Wilsons Royal Pontiac mechanics including Milt Schornack would tune your pontiac with go fast parts. You could order the Bobcat kit by mail and install it yourself or drive to Detroit and have it done for you. Performance parts were the order of the day. You could order 421 heads for your 389 engine or change it over to a 421 completely. In 1968 the 428 big car engine would be installed for about 650.00 with the exchange of the original 400 engine. I spoke to Milt Schornack at the 2006 GTO Nationals and he only remembers a few 428's installed in 68. Arnie Beswick had one called the "Bossman" that terrorized the quarter mile tracks for years. No decals or paint were applied to make it look fast because they were fast with nothing to prove. Only a few were installed with a 428 and I wanted one, so I had to build it. Tail Wagging Puppy I have been driving the Goat regularly for over six years. With a Rodney Red Radiator I Have it running at 160 on the road in the Texas heat with a undersized waterpump pulley, Pontiacs don't have to run hot! This car pulls like a freight train and the bottom end is awsome. The Hurst Dual Gate is a ton of fun with the shift kit. The exhaust tone is perfect sounds like a Goat should at idle and thunder over 3000 RPM. I would drive this combo anywhere but the drone on the freeway gets tiresome after awhile. I have 2000 Trans Am with a M6 and the new car cannot touch the 68 for bottom end acceleration. I have 12 degrees initial timing and 24 degress mechanical advance on my MSD distributor. The carb is running perfect without any work, I guess this thing is in the around 11 or 12 second car as is. I think I can get a few more, tenths by tuning which is always the case. I had a lot of help with this combo and made some compromises to keep it streetable. Thanks to my friends in the hobby like Tim who sold me the car and helped with technical advice and the restoration. Jim Butler who picked out some of this combo, now there is a patient guy! Jim hand for help on the exhaust and his book How to Build High Performance Pontiacs. Cliff's Q jets for the 8oo cfm carb,I only waited 8 months for it. Chris at Continental Converters too. These folks and a few more gave a lot of advice and shared there experience with me. Thanks again yall! I am sure the Chevy guys will really appreciate it! |

Looks Stock But It's Not Here are my Pontiacs in the front yard waiting for someone to come out and play. The black one is a Seven Series 2000 Trans am. The only convertible I know of that was modified by Steve Evans Pontiac in Dallas. That would make it one of one! |
